Winter Shoot-Outs!

{ Dallas Family & Child Photographer | Photography Mentoring and Classes}

As the end of March is just around the corner, that means my beloved class, Refining the Artist, which began January 1, will be wrapping up after three months of introspection, discussion, critique, learning and growth.  I LOVED my students, who have impressed me with their tenacity and their eagerness to grow and be stretched to think past the “doing” of photography and enter into the realm of making art, of creating, of communicating their own unique visions to others through their work.

One of the perks of this class is that, once a month, those of us who can make it convene together to have a shoot-out, and we pick a place near Dallas to shoot, usually with our own kids who come along as models!  We try to mix up the themes and genres, especially since this class is not meant to be genre-specific.  You can take a look at the last set of shoot-outs we did for the last run of my class last Summer here.  It’s always SO fun and somehow we always manage to get good weather.  I mean, January is a huge gamble but it worked out!

The first shoot-out was in Grapevine, Texas, at one of my favorite spots, and we had the most adorable family model for us for a good part of the time, and at the end we photographed the kids we brought with us.  The light was downright luscious!  While it did get a little nippy by the end (it was January remember!), the girls were troopers and we all felt warm and fuzzy anyway after that evening.

The second shoot-out, at the end of February, took place in Lewisville, Texas and we were going for a more “urban hipster” vibe this time.  Remind me who it was again who thought it would be a good idea for the teacher, who is supposed to remain professional, to bring her own kids as models?  Because that person probably should have stayed quiet.  Just saying.

Despite a little unprofessional pleading and scolding, we managed to get some fun pictures anyway. After all, they are pretty darn good looking if I do say so myself.

The third and final shoot-out was in Flower Mound on a rather warm and humid evening in March (complete with a hefty dose of mosquitoes) but once again we were blessed with some amazing sunshine and pretty surroundings.  And, yeah, more adorable children.

The next run of this class is going to be this SUMMER!  You can register right now to get one of the limited spots!  Read all about it here to see the syllabi and all the details you’ll need to know.  Class is non genre-specific (it’s not all portrait!) and participation, while encouraged, is flexible and can be worked around vacations and workloads with ease.  I’d love to have you join me, even if you can’t make the shoot-outs.  You’ll still get loads of value. <3

    Such beautiful work sally. You are an amazing teacher that gives everything to her students without holding back. I really admire your ability to photograph everything and anything, and make it all magical. The photographers that got be a part of this experience are very lucky, as it looks like they captured some beautiful and diverse photos.

    I am totally partial to the Urban session. I love the city and I think you did get some amazing images in the city (the image of the boys and the star burst is just divine). But then again you are amazing, no matter the location. Beautiful images all together.

  4. This looks amazing!! I love the variety of locations to your beautiful tones.

    Sally is THE BEST! If you want to find the artist within YOU – not how to simply copy someone else I highly recommend this course. It’s packed full of soul-searching guidance, with enough how-to’s to round it out. Plus, Sally is so approachable and fun.
