Recently I decided to take on a different kind of project, one I had been wanting to do for a while now but hadn’t had the opportunity.  Finally the opportunity came and I pounced on it – I spent a few hours as a fly on the wall, photographing a family at their home just living their lives, doing normal things, while I followed them around just capturing their essence, who they are as individuals and as members of a loving family.  It was a great little photography project for me because it wasn’t staged, designed, fabricated or styled.  It was just an exercise in observation, watching how they interacted, behaved and loved on each other.

I am a firm believer in the idea that a family photographer should be able to pick up on traits and behaviors of the one of a kind family she is photographing, understanding what makes them unique and capitalizing on what is important.  Every family session should look completely different, because every family is different.  Spending a few hours in a row practicing such observation skills is NEVER a bad idea if you want to be able to gift a family with a collection of images that captures THEIR distinct personalities and connections, at that moment in time.
