I have been working with a girl as her mentor in the past few weeks, and as we build upon her photographic foundation, I thought it would be beneficial to work on shooting in overcast conditions.  Not the type of clouds that are dramatic and interesting, but the boring, flat overcast kinds of clouds.  Sometimes schedules and necessity dictate that one will have to shoot their clients in such conditions, so it’s important to know how to work with light that can be tricky.

I love images to tell a story, so my concentration is always on capturing the essence and personality of my subjects.  This can also be tricky, particularly when the subject is cold and cranky, as was definitely the case here!  #photographerskid  That makes it all the more important to focus on making the subject feel comfortable and free to explore the things that will keep them happy and engaged with both you and their environment.  My daughter loves the feel of dirt and sand running through her fingers, loves showing off her sass and her dance moves, loves flashing her toothless grin.  So I capitalized on those moments where she was most herself, and I shot the little details that freeze this moment in time, where she is right now in her life journey.
